POS Cash Registers: Advantages and Disadvantages of Using POS Cash Registers By Paul Michaels
Most retail stores may prefer cash registers because of their lower costs. However, since the advent of computers, it isn’t quite a wonder as to how these simple registers have evolved into POS cash registers. These new registers have added features and offer more functionalities as compared to the old cash registers.
Nowadays, dedicated POS cash registers are being preferred over POS computer systems. Because these cash registers usually come with software, it lessens the costs in building a POS system. But like others, they also have their own sets of advantages and disadvantages.
Advantages
Cash registers are very affordable for small to medium retail stores. Likewise, they also have the ability to process a client’s transaction, to record transactions accurately and to store money. A POS cash register’s life span is around 10 to 15 years, and can have upgrades about every 5 to 7 years. Most cash register models are also easy to use, so you won’t have any problem when you train your workforce as to how to use them. It also has fewer components which can be easily upgraded, and has basic features and record keeping, as well.
Disadvantages
POS systems generally have more thorough reports as compare to POS cash registers because of their advanced software and hardware, as well. Moreover, POS systems generally have better inventory tracking and record keeping because of networks of servers that can be connected to them. In addition, POS systems easily advance with the business because there are more upgrades available for them, both in hardware and in software. Cash registers generally cannot have customized software, unlike the systems which are composed of computers and are based on Windows, Linux or other operating systems. Their software would only be based on their manufacturer’s settings.
Given these things, a POS cash register can generally do its job quite well, especially if you are saving costs or perhaps just starting out with a small business. It lessens your problems in bookkeeping and keeping track of your sales, as well, but without having to be configured too much like that of a POS system.
